While it is true that surfluous detail is not the same as good roleplaying, there two main styles of freeform rping as far as I can see. Paragraphs and sentence.

The main benefit of paragraphs, iirc, is that it includes description of body language... And sentence is pretty much useless for combat.

Still, using twenty words and communicating for 10 is always bad form. (Yeah. I know. I'm working on it.)

There's more than two styles. :P

Proper pacing is what matters. If it calls for a sentence, it calls for a sentence. If it calls for a paragraph, it calls for a paragraph.
