I am *done* with Spirit Tracks. This does not mean I have beaten it by any means, just that I am sick of the frequency of bullshit and tedium in it. I'd honestly rather do the triforce search in Wind Waker again. At least I can go anywhere I want in that and not be on rails with stupid fucking demon trains that can only be disabled, not destroyed, so sometimes you have to waste 5+ minutes backing up and going around because of the fuckers!

Hell, I've been replaying FFVIII lately, and it's nowhere near as tedious or boring as Spirit Tracks.

You hear that, Nintendo? Your game is more boring than FFVIII!

So yeah, I'm in Dana Point, and for some reason it's hot and humid here even though that almost never happened in the 16 years I've lived in the area. The weather hates me. :P
I said hi to my dad and to my friend across the street, then went wardriving for about an hour before I found an open wifi network. Talked to another local friend and went over to his place for a bit, which was fun. Also managed to snag a burger from A's! I haven't eaten there since I was a little kid, and they make damn fine burgers, to my surprise. (Though I guess I shouldn't be, they're a local icon for a reason.)
Now here I am in the room I stayed in when I lived here, and it's all weird and full of antique stuff now, though at least the unnerving heart trim is gone. Ironically (recall the wardriving) there's a really strong wireless network in range of it, hence my making this post now. (In lynx 'cause I don't like logging into stuff over open wifi; I SSH to my desktop instead and run command line stuff.)
Anyhow, probably going to head back sunday or monday, depending on my friends' status and the weather. Today has been surprisingly fruitful considering I got here at 8:30 PM. Weird how that sort of thing goes.

I just finished watching Six Feet Under, and I've never been this blown away by... well, by anything before. The finale made me cry for over 10 minutes, genuine crying, something I haven't done since my first night in California after I had to move away from Hawaii, when I realized I'd never see most of my friends again. This, on the other hand, was a good thing. I cried, I think, because the ending sequence was not just beautiful itself, but the culmination of something utterly beautiful, and utterly special. It's storytelling and art at its finest, and it's given me a true understanding of the concept of a masterpiece.

It's also, oddly enough, the perfect way to end the night before I leave for southern California. I'm going there to pick up some of the pieces I left behind, and let some important people in my life know that everything is going to be okay, and that I'm going on a journey to find the life I should be living. If I were the superstitious sort, I'd take the way Six Feet Under ended as a sign. At the very least, it's a little bit more inspiration.

    <lj:music>Country Rain - Slowdive</lj:music>

Damn, today was awesome. I drove up to Clearlake with my roommate, and along the way there was a pretty impressive brush fire on the side of the road. We got pretty close to it, and saw the flames.

I took highway 175 from Hopland up to the lake, and I kinda don't want to take that stretch again any time soon. Very, very narrow, and very, very windy. In fact, one of the worst mountain roads I've ever seen, and I used to live in the mountains! Made it though, and the lake was huge, and beautiful.

We stopped for Chinese at a decent little place in Lakeport called Chopsticks (nothing special, but definitely not bad) and then I drove around the lake and back down through Napa County, and forgot to get off the highway in Calistoga. Ended up in Napa, where I decided to take the main drag west because it'd probably hit a road that goes over the mountains eventually. I turned off on Redwood Rd because it sounded feasible.

It was after sunset, and dark, and the road was surrounded by trees and unlit. It was absolutely beautiful; as I mentioned to my roommate, the only thing that could have improved it would have been dim, multicolored paper lanterns in the trees along the roadside. Eventually, through much windy, dark, hilly road, I ended up on Dry Creek Rd, took it left and back up the mountain (d'oh!) then down what I think was Trinity Rd through yet more twists and turns. (Gave my car's 1st gear a good workout!)

On the way down, we got to see something absolutely awe-inspiring: Santa Rosa, from the mountain, with a red haze (probably from the fire I mentioned earlier) and a tiny sliver of a crescent moon over the valley. It was like something out of a painting, and I wish I could've gotten a photo of it. (No tripod. D'oh!)

Finally by sheer luck, we got to Sonoma Highway and took it back home via Kenwood. Turns out I didn't miss anything worthwhile in the woot-off, too! Bonus!

    <lj:music>One More Red Nightmare - King Crimson</lj:music>

I got me one of these vacuum marinaters in the last woot-off for $30, and I was fully expecting it to be snake oil, but it actually works! I made some poke yesterday in it, and 10 minutes (two full cycles) in it did a better job of marinating it than leaving it overnight in the fridge and stirring every few hours or so. It not only got the sauce throughout the fish fully, it also tenderized it noticeably, which made it that much better, IMO. I'd not say it's worth the list price, but if you can score one for around $30 like I did, it's a nice piece of kitchen equipment.
